We live in a culture that glorifies the hustle and bustle of life. Constantly being productive is at the forefront of our minds, at least I know it's at the front of mine. Rest is often seen as a luxury rather than a necessity. Most people push themselves to the brink, they believe that constant activity equates to success. The truth is, rest isn't just important - it's imperative to our everyday lives. Without it, our physical health, mental clarity, creativity, and overall well-being suffer tremendously.
Right now, as I type this blog, I am just clocking out from my second remote job. On top of that I am working extremely hard to finish my second book, all while studying my lines and preparing for a stage play, I was cast in that premiered this past Friday. This is nothing new to me though. I have always been one who is doing the most in my life. Working 2 & 3 jobs to support my family all while serving in ministry. The only difference between back then and now, is that I rest when my body tells me too. I will shut everything down for a quick 30-minute power nap to refuel and get back to it. Sometimes, it might take an hour, but I will get the rest I need to keep going. Rest isn't only napping, it is taking a break to relax and reset so you can refocus.
According to a Gallup poll in December 2023, 26% of Americans reported getting eight or more hours of sleep per night. This is a significant decrease from 1942, when 59% of Americans reported getting eight or more hours of sleep. We already don't get enough sleep as it is, so rest is very important.
Here are some reasons why rest is so imperative:
Rest Fuels Productivity - the more we work without breaks, the less productive we become. Rest enhances focus, efficiency, and decision making.
Rest Strengthens Physical Health - sleep and relaxation are essential for bodily functions, including muscle recovery, immune system support, and heart health. Chronic stress and lack of rest contribute to conditions like high blood pressure, weakened immunity, and even heart disease.
Rest Supports Mental Wellbeing - burnout, anxiety, and depression are often linked to overworking and chronic stress. Taking time to rest—whether through sleep, meditation, or simply stepping away from work—reduced cortisol levels and enhances emotional resilience.
Rest Sparks Creativity and Innovation - ever notice how your best ideas come when you're in the shower or taking a walk? That's because rest fosters creativity.
Rest Improves Relationships - when we are exhausted and mentally drained, we are less patient, empathetic, and present in our relationships. Rest allows us to show up fully for those we love.
Rest Is a Form of Self-Respect - choosing to rest is an act of self-care and self-respect. It acknowledges our limits and honors our need for balance. Instead of seeing rest as a weakness, we should embrace it as a vital part of a sustainable fulfilling life.
Rest isn't a reward for hard work—it's a requirement for a thriving life. By prioritizing rest, we enhance our well-being, boost our productivity, and ultimately create a more sustainable path to success. So, the next time you feel guilty for taking a break, remember rest isn't a waste of time—it's the fuel that keeps us going.
Sending you love, light and positive vibes,
Cassie K.
