Talk about patience!

A couple of weeks ago I made an appointment to get my flu shot, a requirement to maintain my employment. (Sad Face) If it wasn't for that requirement that was put into place 3 years ago, I would not be doing it, but I digress.  I show up and give the pharmacist my insurance card, when she goes to verify the information, she tells me that my insurance was terminated as of December 2023.  I tell her that's not possible as I just had a mammogram earlier this year and everything was fine. She tells me if I want to continue with the appointment then I would need to pay.  Umm absolutely not. What the heck do I pay for medical insurance for.  She suggests I contact my employer, but she will put my paperwork aside and I can come back in.  I headed out to my car and decided to call the number on the back of my insurance card. Once I get a hold of someone in customer care, she verifies my info, and she informs me that all is well. She even confirms with her supervisor that everything is intact.  She tells me to go back to the pharmacy and have them a try again, if it doesn't work this time, call the number on the back of the card for pharmacy help and it should be fine.

I headed back into the pharmacy and told the technician that my insurance was good.  She tried again to verify my eligibility, and it came back terminated.  I relayed everything the customer care lady told me and then I called the pharmacy help desk. Once I got this help desk woman on the phone, she too told me that I was not covered. She then proceeded to ask me why I was calling because this was a pharmacy help desk number. To which I replied, "ma’am, I am at the pharmacy. I was told to call you if this happened again regarding my insurance." To which she replied with an attitude, why are you calling the pharmacy help desk?  At this point I could feel myself getting agitated as I explained to her what was told to me.  There was an elderly lady sitting next to me and she was offering her advice.  She says to me, you know they say patience is a virtue and you are handling this quite well.  That was just what I needed to continue with a good attitude in the midst of my frustration. I hung up with that woman and called customer care line back again.  To make a long story short, it turned out that they never sent me a new insurance card and the pharmacy had my old billing information on hand.

I was highly frustrated after the back and forth had been going on about this for an hour and a half. The elderly woman’s remark reminded me to pause, take a deep breath and give myself a moment to process and reset. By me pausing in that moment, it shifted my perspective and made it easier for me to respond in a way that I felt good about.  The next time you feel agitated or upset because of something or someone, take a moment to pause and reflect, I can guarantee it will help you in the long run.

Sending you love, light and positive vibes,

Cassie K.
