Most of the time we don’t even know we are stressed. We can feel pain, headaches, body aches as well as stomach aches and not know why. According to the World Health Organization, Stress can be defined as any type of change that causes physical, emotional, or psychological strain. Stress is your body's response to anything that requires attention or action. Everyone experiences stress to some degree. It’s the way we handle that stress that matters.
I was talking to a friend recently and they told me about having their annual checkup and this was their first appointment in their seasoned life, they had an issue. They found out that they had high blood pressure. My response to this was they could be stressed, and they agreed. Work has been very stressful and the recent events with the murder of Tyre Nichols has had them on edge.
Last month I found out some news that has had my mind racing a thousand miles a minute. I have never experienced any type of GI problems until recently and it has me popping Tums like its candy and I don’t know why this is happening. I had to sit down and think about anything that has changed in my life recently that may be causing me this discomfort. My mind immediately went back to some news that was brought to my attention. Now nothing has been confirmed but just the thought of what it entails and who it will possibly affect has me on edge. My body is tense, my mind is racing, and my stomach has been giving me the blues. For a week I’ve been feeling like my stomach been twisted in knots.
The Bible teaches us in Philippians 4:6-7 not to worry so much about everything. We are to pray, ask God for what we need with a grateful heart and God’s peace which surpasses human comprehension will guard our hearts and keep our minds right. For me it’s meditating on the word of God and knowing that everything will work itself out. One of my favorite scriptures is Romans 8:28, for God works all things together for those who love the Lord and has been called according to His purpose. He did not bring me this far to just leave me. That no matter that outcome of this news, it is well with me. Oh, please don’t ask me any questions as I am still ironing out all the details.
I want to encourage you as I encourage myself when you find yourself stressed or having feelings you’ve never had before pause and take some deep breaths. Breathe in for 5-10 seconds and breathe out for 5-10 seconds. Do this for at least 60 seconds. Find a moment to sit and silence and listen to your body. Center your thoughts and emotions. Make sure you are getting daily exercise of some kind. Get off your phone and pick up a book, read a good poem, listen to some calming music, or even light a candle. Take your mind off whatever it is that may be causing you discomfort. Even for just a moment. We must take care of ourselves, or we won’t be around to enjoy our family and friends and this life we been blessed with. Find some time to de-stress and calm your spirit, your body will thank you.
Sending you love, light and positive vibes,
Cassie K.
