We all do it - complain about our jobs, relationships, the weather, or even traffic. It is so easy to vent and blame circumstances for our frustrations. Have you ever listened to yourself and realized that your complaints are getting you nowhere? Complaining rarely changes anything in our lives. Think about it, it actually keeps you stuck in a negative loop.
Aren't you tired of hearing yourself or others complain? I mean, really ask yourself that question. If you are, it's time to take action for yourself. Now as far as others complaining, you can just ignore them because it really doesn't do you any good. But with you, it's time to take some action.
Here are a few ways you can shift your mindset and take control of your life instead of dwelling on the problems.
Recognize the Habit - complaining often becomes second nature. The more we do it, the more it feels justified. Pay attention to when and why you complain. Are you seeking sympathy or avoiding responsibility? When you identify the root cause it can help you break the habit.
Reframe the Situation - instead of focusing on what's wrong, shift your perspective on what is right.
Ask yourself these questions:
What can I learn from this?
How can I improve this situation?
What am I grateful for despite this challenge?
When you change your mindset from "Why is this happening to me?" to "What can I do about it?" it empowers you to take control.
Take Action or Let It Go - there are two types of problems: those you can solve and those you can't. Two types of people, those who watch things happen, or those who make things happen. If something is within your control, take action. If not, accept it and move on. Complaining about things you can't change only drains your energy.
Surround Yourself with Positivity - misery loves company, and if you're always around people who always complain, you become just like them. Make sure you seek out people who inspire and uplift you. Their mindset will help reinforce your own commitment to change. At the end of the day, you are in charge of yourself and you have to make the decision to be positive.
Practice Gratitude - A simple yet powerful way to stop yourself from complaining is to focus on all the things that are going right in your life. It's so simple as taking a moment each day to appreciate what you have. You could even keep a gratitude journal. The more you stay with an attitude of gratitude, the less room you have to complain.
Challenge Yourself to a No-Complaint Day - try going a whole day without complaining. If you catch yourself starting to complain, stop and readjust your thoughts and change your words to give thanks. Over time, this practice will become a new habit, helping you approach life with a more proactive and positive attitude.
Something to think about. Complaining might feel good the moment you start it but it won't change your situation. Instead shift your focus to solutions, giving thanks and positive action. Life may not be perfect, but your outlook on it can be. So, the next time you feel the urge to complain about something, ask yourself: "What am I going to do about it?"
