Just because you can doesn’t mean you should! The Bible says in Proverbs 10:17, he who listens when corrected is on the path of life, but a man who rejects reproof will go astray.
I was so excited when I published my story and I wanted to get it into as many hands as possible. I started looking up peoples addresses on Google. Not people that I personally knew, but people that I admire, and I revere, some who are in the public eye. I remember listening to a podcast where the speaker told all the independent authors they may need to give away more books than they sell to get their name out there and I ran with it. What I failed to realize is, that was not the way to get it done.
Even though my intentions were good, it wasn’t a good thing that I did. Looking up someone's personal address without asking permission is very intrusive and honestly gives public people stalking vibes. The best thing for me to do was to ask for someone's business address and if they didn’t give it to me, then that’s it. It never crossed my mind, how it made me feel to receive unsolicited mail (irritated for sure), then I turned around and sent out unsolicited mail myself. My intent was to gift my story, but my impact may have affected people negatively.
I was talking to a friend today and he was reminding me how people do dumb stuff. Especially when it’s something they are passionate about. Sometimes they don’t use their common sense. And in this instance, I definitely did not use mine.
Do me a favor, before you jump in the deep end without a life jacket. Ask yourself is this something that’s normal. Is it okay to pursue this? Will it offend or make people uncomfortable? How would it make me feel if I was on the receiving end? Let’s make sure we have all our bases covered and not operate out of pure emotion.
Sending you love, light and positive vibes,
Cassie K.
