Have you ever had to deal with a disgruntled driver or maybe you were the one who was upset while driving? We all have our days when things seem to not be going in our favor. I already know some of you reading about my encounter will either laugh or get angry, either way I hope it blesses you.
The other day I was on my way home from work and I stopped at a red light. This particular intersection is tricky because if you pull up too far, you can be hit by a car that you can’t see, so I pulled up just a little bit to make sure that the coast was clear. In the midst of me checking for cars, the light turned green, and I didn’t notice it. Someone behind me leaned on their horn, blasting it so loud, my spirit jumped! I looked in my rear-view mirror and it was a freaking older Caucasian lady with blonde hair and wearing glasses. As I turned the corner, I wanted to pull over and get out and slap the dog poop out of her. She startled me with her horn honking something fierce as you can see. Instead, I went extremely slow, almost coming to a complete stop. I said out loud to myself and to her like she could hear me, blow your horn again. I went to roll down my window halfway, and I could see her in the rearview mirror on her phone. I don’t know if she was taking a picture of my license plate or calling the police. So, I decided to roll my window back up and continue driving home. It really frustrates me when people are being overly extra when driving. Don't get mad at me because you didn't leave earlier and may be running late. I am obeying the traffic laws and if you don't like it, that is a YOU problem. I definitely told her to have the day she deserved.
Dealing with disgruntled drivers requires patience, empathy, and clear communication to defuse tensions and ensure safety. I had to use most of these tools during the scenario I described. It's so easy to get out of character while driving and sometimes I do, but in this day and age you have to be careful because there are some folks who will use weapons without even batting an eye. My main goal is to get to my destination safely and securely.
I hope the next time you encounter a monster on the road you are able to maintain your composure while showing empathy and then you can manage that disgruntled driver and turn that challenging situation into a more positive interaction.
Sending you love, light and positive vibes,
Cassie K.
